Choosing a Traditional Baby Shower Gift

You’ve just been invited to a baby shower, now you are faced with the prospect of buying a baby gift.  There are some things you need to consider, first of course, is the sex of the expected family member known? How prepared are the parents for this child? Do they have everything they need or even the bare necessities?  If this is a first child they may not even know how many things a baby needs.

You may already know all these things if you are close to either of the parents, if not, if you are just a co-worker, fellow choir or club member or even a distant cousin you may need to call the R.S.V.P. number on the invitation and ask what’s needed, someone will be glad to give you a list.  The list may include anything from big price items, strollers, infant car seat, of even a crib, down to something as inexpensive as a baby rattle, or teething ring.  This call is also a good time to ask if they plan on using cloth or plastic diapers.

An import consideration in the giving of a gift is to give a gift that is memorable as well as within the constraints of your budget.  The most memorable gift you can ever give is one that is handmade, preferably by you, for example a pair of baby booties you crocheted would be an excellent “Welcome to the World” gift for the child of an acquaintance.  On the other hand if you work closely with the parent, a lovely soft baby quilt or afghan may be more memorable than any purchased gift.

One thing every baby needs is diapers in fact a newborn may go through eighty diapers in a week.  There are basically three ways to give diapers, Disposable a package of eighty four newborn diapers is currently about $19.00, cloth diapers can be purchased in a five pack for around $5.00, or you can give a week of diaper service for about $18.00.  No matter what type of diapers you choose they will always be a welcome gift.

A baby’s first year scrap book or photo album can be excellent choices for gifts, as can a camera or a gift certificate to a local photography studio, these can be gifts that will be appreciated for years to come.

Since a newborn can be expected to dirty three to five changes of clothing per day never underestimate the value of undershirts, onesies (long undershirts that snap under the crotch), pajamas, lots of pajamas.  And for a gift that sure to please little dress up outfits, jeans and a flannel shirt for boys or a little pink dress and diaper cover with lots of lace and bows.
