There are many good articles that discuss gift ideas that are nice for mothers, this article is not one of them. Have you ever really paid attention to your mom's reaction to the gifts you have given her over the years? Her reaction is an important part of the gift-giving process.
The reason you give mom a gift is because you love and appreciate her, therefore you hope she will love the gift. There is a little known fact about moms: they will pretend to like the absolute worst gifts, simply because you gave it to her. Moms are just awesome that way. - Kitchen items
Even if mom collects kitchen items like canisters or cookie jars, let her do that herself. Kitchen items tend to make a mother feel like all she is viewed as is the cook. She might smile and seem excited about kitchen gifts, but inside she might be a little hurt. Mom deserves a gift for her, not for a room she ends up spending a lot of time in everyday. This really is one the top worst gifts you can give her. On the other side of the coin, if your mom does not do a lot of cooking, gifting her kitchen items can almost be a slap in the face. It might make her feel like you are hinting that she should start cooking more.
- Cleaning supplies/gadgets
This is also at the top of the list of horrible gifts. Cleaning supplies and gadgets are a part of her everyday world and do not express who she is as a person. Mom is not a maid so do not give her gifts that will make her feel like one. The simple fact is that gifting cleaning items shows you did not put much thought into who she is and what she likes.
- Sewing items/gadgets
Unless the items are unique or antique, or she collects sewing memorabilia, avoid giving these items as a gift. Moms that are really good at sewing, probably got that way because they mended lots of holes in clothing. Mom is not a seamstress, she deserves a gift that does not remind her of household chores. Some moms do not know how to sew and giving them these items will only appear as though you are trying to hint that she should learn how to sew. No one likes to be reminded of things they cannot or do not do on a regular basis.
- Stuff you like
You might think you are giving her a gift that will help her be more trendy or up to date, but chances are she will not really like it. For example if you are really into horror movies and you give her a horror movie trilogy, she might not like it as much as you would. No matter what it is you like, you cannot just assume your mom will like it. In a way, it is being selfish to not bother to find out what she really likes.
What it all comes down to is putting some real thought and time into the gift you give your mother, or a mother you know. Remember, she is mother, but she is also a unique individual with interests and hobbies.
