Ways to Make Thanksgiving Special in your Home
Thanksgiving is a holiday that is centered on giving thanks for the gracious blessings you have, sharing family time and enjoying a meal with those you love. There are many ways to add small touches that make your Thanksgiving holiday extra special.
Children are always eager to help decorate a house. From age two to tween, kids simply love getting in on the action and adding something they created to holiday décor. Some very easy ways to decorate are even easier than you imagined. If you can get shadowbox frames with very simple interior frame cardboard you can make your own fall wall collage. As the leaves fall from the trees, make a game of finding perfect and vibrant fall leaves. You will be amazed at how wonderful they will look in a simple frame grouped on your wall. To expand on this each frame can bear a single word that represents what the child who found the leaf is grateful for this year.
Every year there is always great debate about the best way to make the Thanksgiving turkey perfect. If you want the most delicious bird on the block you need to spice it up, literally! Get some fresh herbs that will add to the flavor of the turkey. Rosemary and thyme can infuse their fragrant aroma and are easily found in the grocery store. Make a small cut in the skin of the turkey and poke some rosemary under the skin to add tons of flavors to your turkey!
Kids also love to add something special to the Thanksgiving meal. Autumn is harvest time and there is no better activity than apple picking. After the apples are picked the kids can help you prepare baked apples for the meal. Once the kids wash the apples, be sure to core them out. Then let the kids put cinnamon and sugar on the apples. They are baked and make a great treat for the Thanksgiving table. The children can also pick small pumpkins and you can core them out to make wonderful candle holders (for glass jar candles).
Finally, Thanksgiving is complete without the Thanksgiving Parade! One fun activity to do while your family watches the parade is play parade bingo. You can easily find out which floats and animals will be parading in the major parades of Thanksgiving, especially Macy’s in New York. Create a simple grid in your word processing program and change the location and order of the floats.
