Office romances are often considered taboo as they not only create conflicts of interests, but there ends, more often than not result in an awkward and confrontational office atmosphere for those involved in the relationship along with the rest of the work crew. This may be especially true when it comes to relationships between managers and subordinates whether or not they are directly under each other. Although the possibility of a healthy, stable romance arising from a work relationship exits, more often than not, they are poor ideas that should probably be avoided.

On the other hand, close contact over long periods of time are likely to result in personal relationships, some friendships may even unintentionally bloom into romances. Like all romantic involvements, they should only be started when the couple understands the responsibility and implications that may result from the relationship; though most people understand this simply requirement, they seldom follow such wisdom. Therefore, above all, relationships must be transparent, so the behavior of the manager can be scrutinized when it is directed toward his or her mate. Ideally, such relationships are between managers who do not directly command the subordinate, but his cannot always be the case as businesses cannot always be flexible enough to avoid such interactions. Whenever possible, the manager must relinquish authority over matters involving the significant other.

In the case of a failed relationship, the pair should have started their relationship with an understanding of what would happen if the relationship ended. Even with this precaution, a breakup involving strong emotions will not be pretty as the close proximity could push one individual to leave their employment behind; such a scenario must be considered. Whether at the beginning or end of a romance, partners must maintain a separation between their work and personal relationships. Furthermore, some people are able to separate their emotional involvements and others are not; depending upon circumstances, this could be the determining factor in whether or not a relationship should even be considered.

Above all, office romances are possible and can be successfully juggled in the work environment but they are inadvisable for those who are not prepared for the end. Ultimately, the decision involves the two involved in the relationship, but the relationship must be transparent to protect the couple and the company.
