Pros and Cons of Seasonal Employment

From 3arf

Everything has its negative and positives aspects with seasonal employment being no exception.  You will need to have the right mind set when you enter this job market to avoid becoming discouraged with some of the situations you’ll encounter.  Keep in mind some of the disadvantages listed below.

Short Term

Seasonal jobs are short term by definition and the employee is usually treated accordingly.  Benefits (other than a pay check) are basically non-existent and there is little concern about handing out pink slips if someone doesn’t meet expectations.

Hired from a Data Base

Many of the larger retailers hire from online applications which electronically sort applicants according to the information provided.  There is another waiting to take the place of someone who isn’t working out or suddenly can’t work the hours or days they indicated were available in the application.

Labor Intensive

The seasonal employee takes the brunt of the work load.  They are hired to make things run smoother for the company and take some of the pressure off the regular staff.  The key is a willingness to be flexible and do the tasks assigned as efficiently as possible.  Often these jobs require the employee to work with the public which isn’t always a great experience.  The seasonal worker can expect to be on their feet with a smile on their face the majority of their shift. They may be required to work in areas in which they have no particular knowledge and will often be required to think on their feet in order to keep customers happy.

Time Consuming

If you’re used to spending your time caring for your family you may find it somewhat unsettlingly to be away from home for a long block of time.  It is an adjustment and sometimes, depending on the individual’s circumstances, it may not be the worth the benefits of seasonal employment.

Low Pay

A temporary employee will generally make less money than the regular employee despite the disadvantages listed above.  In addition the temporary employee has to keep in mind they really can’t count on anything but the pay check they’ve all ready earned.  While this has become more of reality for everyone with the economy still struggling to cast off the recession it is particularly true of the short timer.

But there are advantages to being employed regardless of the terms. So keep in mind the below perks to weigh against the negatives.

Money

Increased income is a good thing.  This is especially true if you’re looking for extra money for the holidays or to pay down debt or some other need.  It’s a way of having the additional cash you require without putting undo strain on your budget.

In Roads

Seasonal employees can and do become permanent employees.  It can provide a doorway through which you can join the company.  You will have the opportunity to show management that you are a team player and up for anything they can throw your way.  There are no guarantees that things will go your way but there is a chance you could land yourself a full time job with growth potential.

Experience

Even if the job remains temporary you will walk away with valuable work experience.  It will give you more to list on your resume and perhaps some professional references besides.

Time Away

It will give you a break from your normal routine (also listed as a disadvantage).  For some (depending on individual situations) a change of scenery and routine can leave one mentally refreshed even if physically tired.

If you find yourself working as a seasonal employee (either by need or by choice) it’s up to you to make the best of the position.  Accept the built in disadvantages and try to make the situation work for you,
