Engineering Major
Besides the fact that everything you use in daily life was developed by an engineer, Engineering is a fun and rewarding profession that promotes competitiveness and innovation. If you have a creative side that you just can seem to outlet correctly, engineering might just be the major for you.
People may think of boring, drab, and dull when they think of the word engineering, but it is just the opposite. Think of yourself as a problem solver? Engineers do. Every time society is faced with a problem, engineers comes in and devise a plan to facilitate things and make life easier. As problem solvers, engineers base their thoughts and ideas on optimized and rational thinking by applying them to economical and innovative solutions to various problems we encounter in life, making things faster, better, easier, and more efficient.
The reason most people dislike engineering is the mathematics and scientific knowledge required to implement any and all ideas. The fact of the matter is that this world we live in thrives on math and science. Without it, we would still be in the Stone Age making cars for Fred Flinstone. The humanities, although essential for healthy mental health, lack the concrete basis behind inventions and machinery. Words and language communicate messages and convey meanings and thoughts, but there has to be some topical information to write about. Engineers provide practical, meaningful applications to every day life things that everyone can appreciate. The constant ability of engineers to improve new technology from old technology stems from the basis that engineering promotes competitiveness. Engineers are always trying to outdo each other, something both innovative and rewarding. Only by competing with each other can we move higher.
You may enjoy engineering because everything is set in stone. Without the need for gray area or "interpretation," if something is wrong, it's wrong. Likewise, if something is right, it's right. Many people enjoy problem solving because there is only one way to solve a problem, but many ways to implement a plan of action. So you see, there IS flexibility in engineering.
As we enter the 21st century, too few students are choosing engineering as a college major. To the point where Bill Gates, one of the richest men on earth, made a comment at a press conference that only 2 out of every 10 college students is majoring in engineering. Considering how far we've come in the last century, that is a scary prospect. If the current generation were to somehow give up something so useful and vital such as engineering, innovations such as technology, healthcare, and space travel would all suffer. In order to defend against such an outcome, it is necessary for today's students to step up and choose engineering as a major. From Aerospace to Industrial, from Electrical to Computer, there are over 17 different types of engineering professions, something to suit everyone.
