Easy Christmas Songs for Young Children to Learn

From 3arf

Christmas songs are an important part of culture that are passed down from generation to generation. Traditional religious Christmas carols along with modern secular songs about Santa are all part of the holiday repertoire that children will experience. Some of the easiest tunes have just a few different notes meaning they can easily be mastered by children learning instruments, while the easiest lyrics are often from songs written in rhyme.

1. "Away in the Manger" is one of the most popular Christmas songs that children learn to sing. There are some 5 verses but just a few short lines to each verse, and these lines rhyme, making the song easy to pick up and remember. The song was written for a children's Sunday School so the vocabulary is also most suited to children using simple words ending with a prayer for Jesus to bless all children making it a lovely song to teach about Christmas. For children learning to play an instrument nine different notes need to be mastered.

2. "Jingle Bells" is a popular Christmas song to teach young children because it is easy to get them to join in with shaking bells or making noises. Once they know about Santa they also find it very exciting to sing about sleigh bells jingling in the chorus. There are actually several verses to the song although it is the chorus (about being fun to ride on a sleigh) being the most famous part of the song, often appearing as a song in its own right. For children learning to play an instrument just five different notes need to be mastered for the chorus making it a good song to start learning an instrument.

3."Rudolph the red nosed reindeer" is a song from the 1940s about the lead reindeer on Santa's sleigh having a red nose, being teased, but coming out on tops being chosen by Santa. Children love the four simple rhyming verses which they can bob along to easily and also the message of victory for the downtrodden reindeer who ends up being the favorite!

4. "We wish you a merry Christmas" is a short song that children around the world learn to sing having its roots hundreds of years ago in England's west country when carol singers used to perform to the wealthy and hope to receive gifts, especially the Christmas pudding. The carol is a very suitable song for children to learn as a group and sing to adults, and is often performed by children in school and kindergarten concerts.
