Decorating for Halloween
Decorating for Halloween using silhouettes is quite easy and very amusing to guests. Using black paper of any kind, and a pattern of owls, mice, witches, spiders or skulls; cut these out in varying sizes. You can find these patterns just about any where online.
Place your black mice in obvious areas such as baseboards, running up a flight of stairs or scurrying about in a window. Add electric candles to your window for backlighting. Use owls, spider or skulls on the underside of your lampshades and turn your lamps on.
Go one step further by putting large silhouettes in your windows. Simply hang a ghostly sheet in a window, turn a lamp light on and you have a terrific window decoration for Halloween.
Use the mirrors in your house. Take a black permanent marker and draw spooky eyes on a mirror. Don’t let this project scare you. Permanent marker on glass is easily removed with rubbing alcohol. Do a little test on the glass first however.
Purchase cheese cloth and black material. Purchasing black material is inexpensive and you don’t have to hem the edges. Simply leave them rough when you cut it down to fit. You may even want to pull the edges to look ragged.
Take your cheese cloth and pull it. Pulled cheese cloth has its own web-like look and by pulling it, you can cover a small table. Lay it over a black cloth and you have a decorated table.
Whether you are decorating for Halloween for your personal enjoyment or an upcoming party, do use pumpkins. Using artificial pumpkins will be a huge time saver. These can be purchased most anywhere including discount stores. Wherever you purchase them, make sure your pumpkin’s top is removable. Some should have carved features also.
Use pumpkins as vases by adding dark, silk flowers with leaves and stems or add battery operated votives. Add a few real pumpkins however around your home however. This will lend a certain authenticity to your decorations.
Artificial spider webbing can be used every where. Pull it and drape it over your flower arrangements, candles and pumpkins. Hang webbing in conspicuous places such as corners, doors and archways.
Place a large pumpkin on your table as a centerpiece with leaves and vines. Use battery operated pillar candles then drape spider webbing over everything. This is an excellent use for battery operated candles.
Electric or battery operated candles are a much safer idea than open flame candles. Many of these candles come with flicker lights which gives them a ‘real’ candle look. Some of these candles can be purchased with timers or even remotes.
Simple battery operated candles will be the least expensive though. You may want to give smaller rooms an eerie look by replacing light bulbs with black lights. This is great for a bathroom or a child’s room, as black lights can be purchased as fluorescent or regular sized bulbs.
Having a party? Drape your furniture with sheets. This gives your Halloween decorations an added haunted look to your home. Draping your furniture will also keep it a little cleaner. It may not protect from spilled drinks but it will keep dropped food and even glitter from costumes from spoiling your furniture.
Decorating for Halloween need not be overwhelming or even costly. Use your imagination with these ideas, have fun and even go a little crazy as you decorate your home. It is, after all, Halloween.
