ALT-3 Things you should never Talk about with Coworkers
The people you work with can seem like an extension of your own family. After a period of some months or years genuine friendships can develop and at this point you might feel it's safe to reveal your innermost feelings and opinions about a variety of issues. Be careful and don't make the mistake of talking just for the sake of it. You could be seen as unprofessional and possibly unworthy of the job you've been given.
Religion
You wouldn't talk about this in any other social situation, and it's not appropriate to do it at work. This is one issue that should be kept at home. Use common sense and stay silent about anything to do with religion. The simple fact is that it's too volatile and if people feel their religion is being ridiculed, it will immediately become personal. Then you'll have a real drama on your hands.
Politics
This isn't a good thing to discuss unless you're absolutely positive the person you're talking to is on the same side of the political fence. It's tempting to bring the subject up when an election draws near, but your party preference is yours and yours alone. A conversation like this could result in an argument and people may turn against you. Others could care less and be bored to tears. Save whatever you've got to say for a blog.
Workplace Gossip
What goes around comes around. Whatever you share about another colleague will not stay a secret for long. How could you expect people not to talk? If you begin to circulate a rumor about somebody else in the same company it will be twisted and misinterpreted in all kinds of ways, and you can be sure it will be heard by the wrong people. The consequences will probably be less than pleasant.
Your Problems Outside of Work
If you're looking for a sympathetic audience you probably won't find one. Everyone else has their own issues to deal with, and some are far more problematic. People who complain about their dysfunctional lifestyles will be viewed as unstable, unfocused and uninterested in doing any work. Everyone talks and sooner or later the boss will hear about your negative influence.
Money
We live in a status oriented society and when people are asked how much they earn, they can feel as though they're being judged. If you're employed in an occupation relating to finance that changes things a bit. It would be impossible not to talk about money. Otherwise, information about pay and raises must remain between you, the boss and the human resources department.
Racial Jokes
These won't be appreciated by everyone. Once again, they can be misunderstood if overheard by the wrong people. These days it's not unusual to work with individuals of many cultures and ethnicities, and humor will not be interpreted in the same way. Use discretion and save the jokes until you're with friends outside of work with whom you know you can share a good laugh.
There are other miscellaneous topics that should be avoided, such as abortion, the origins of man, gun control, health-care and many more. Basically, anything that's highly controversial should be left alone. You may not agree with another's viewpoint at work, but arguing will certainly make it worse. To keep your sanity and your job, talk about some easy subjects like sports, movies or food.
