Why its not a Good Idea to Talk about Politics at Work
If there's one trait that all humans share, it's the desire to express an opinion. Making your political beliefs known at work, however, isn't the wisest thing to do. Discussing politics isn't like talking about sports; there are several reasons you should stay neutral or silent if a political conversation does come up at the office.
You never know who is listening
At work it isn't a good idea to reveal your political stripes to your colleagues even if they appear to be on your side. Your opinions may not be overtly hostile but there is bound to be somebody in the office who feels differently — a person who isn't involved but can hear what's being said. If this individual goes to the boss and files a complaint you could be reprimanded or fired.
Emotions can override good judgment
Like religion, the nature of politics is subjective. People are normally passionate about what they believe in, and don't react well when another questions those deeply-held convictions. Political discussions can stir up powerful emotions rather quickly. How long will it take before people begin to speak in accusatory tones and lose sight of the fact that politics is about philosophy rather than truth?
Wasting time at work
Some people are not interested in politics and will have little to say. In that case, don't push it. Who has the time for debates in the office? The only things that should be discussed at work are the important tasks of the day. Save political conversations until you're sitting at the dinner table at home. Better to talk about the hot issues with family than with people who aren't members of your household.
Some things to consider
The political climate in the United States and other countries is polarized, and you have to accept that nothing will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. The debates have been going on forever and it's no use arguing about them. At work, you have to know the rest of the staff quite well if you initiate a political discussion. On the other hand, if there are people who are uptight and easily offended then it's best to keep quiet.
Aim for camaraderie and respect at work, because it's the place where you spend most of your time. Like it or not, workplace politics will keep you busy enough.
