ALT-2 How to Make yourself more Employable

From 3arf

So, you have been lucky to nail quite a few interviews; however, for some reason you are not hired. It is obvious from all accounts that the job market is brutal. Over fifteen million are still without employment; hence, this means that a great number of prospective employees are chasing few positions. Many have become frustrated because the bill collectors are calling daily and the bills are piling up considerably. Some employers have expressed that they would prefer to hire candidates who are already in jobs. But, what if you are unable to nab that job?

It is evident that based on the competition in the job marketplace,  you has to make yourself more employable. And, that starts with having a positive outlook on seeking that position. Yes, it is rather difficult to have a sun shiny attitude when things are falling apart around you and the doors seem to be closing in your face. However, statistics have shown that those who opt to be optimistic about obtaining that employment tend to gain a favorable outcome. Perhaps, it is because your inner being tend to reflect on the exterior; and prospective employers will observe this. No one desires to employ someone who lacks motivation, passion and zest. Fake it until it becomes part of you (more second nature). You have nothing to lose.

Maybe, you have been employed for several years; and you have some what gotten comfortable and complacent with your position. Suddenly, you find yourself displaced as a middle-age person now rubbing shoulders with 20 and 30 year olds chasing the same jobs. Without a doubt, you have the edge in regards to experience; however, perhaps you are deficient in the area of computers. Moreover, the positions been offered require computer skills. This is not the time to feel despondent and give up. In order to make yourself more competitive and employable, it is best to return to the classroom and secure those skills needed to obtain that job.

This is the opportune time to revamp your resume. The one you use to have a decade ago will not cut it. Think of tailoring your resume to fit the position your are applying for. Yes, you have several years of experience in manufacturing as a manager; but now, you are seeking a job in the restaurant service as a manager. Perhaps, you should highlight on your resume that you are capable in communicating and managing individuals across the board. This will show your interpersonal skills. Make your resume stand out from the pack by including key words that will grab the interviewer. Moreover, try to keep your resume on one page, making sure to include pertinent information. When attending an interview, travel with a CD of your resume along with a hard copy.

Appearance is detrimental to your future employers. It should not be so; but, that's how society judges us. Therefore, you want to impress your prospective employers by wearing appropriate attire to the interview. It would be best to gather a feel of the workplace and observe beforehand how they carry themselves. Try not to wear outfits that are overly colorful and tight. There is no reason to wear all the jewelry in your chest. If it is a lawyer's office, already you know that the attire is somewhat conservative. You want to look the part of where you will be employed. At the same time, you don't wish to look like you are trying too hard. Dress to suit your age without looking out of date.

At the interview, ensure that you obtain all the names and job titles of the personnel who conducted the interview. This information will be very helpful later on when you send them a 'thank you' letter for granting  you the opportunity for the interview.
