How to become the most Employable Person
It would stand to reason that an employer will want to hire someone who is able to meet the needs of the company for which they will be working. The hiring process is costly, arduous and time consuming. The hope is that the prospective employee will quickly adjust to their new work environment, assimilate cohesively with existing team members, and stay with the company for many years. Listed below are tips that should make anyone quite employable.
Appearance
Have an appropriate, clean, and sharp appearance. No matter the position for which the prospective employee is hoping to obtain, appearance is a significant factor. The saying goes, “You only get once chance to make a first impression.” Therefore, make it count! Weight, clothing, and grooming are critical points of contention. Weight is not something, however, that can be altered for an interview that will take place tomorrow. Yet putting the best face on it until such time that the issue can be dealt with is the best advice. In other words, wear something suitable for the job interview that fits nicely and comfortably. Grooming is important – clean nails, a neat hair style, polished shoes – people notice such details.
Attitude
Have a great attitude. Be positive, flexible, congenial, personable, yet have definite and appropriate opinions about matters such as work relations, obligations and responsibilities.
Education
It is never too late to obtain more education and certainly never too late to develop technological skills that will help the prospective employee compete in the marketplace of the Twenty-first Century. It does not have to be a costly endeavor or involve a lengthy time frame. A computer course may only last six weeks, and there are many employment opportunities in the healthcare industry that do not require years of training (i.e., nurse aide, caregiver).
Sense of Self
The individual should have a sense of what they are good at, what they enjoy doing, and what they have a passion for. An individual can be educated without ever setting foot on a college campus. Skills such as communication and writing skills can be honed by spending time reading and writing.
Resume
Always have an updated and current resume available that list relevant data (i.e., education, experience, honors, awards, hobbies, contact information). Resumes should be no longer than one page.
No matter what type of employment the prospective employee is seeking, these suggestions are universal. If taken seriously, these suggestions can assist anyone in their quest to be more employable.
