Make yourself Employable out of Work
You want to find a job but you are having trouble finding one due to having a big obstacle in your way. Your search is being hindered by not having a job, as some employers prefer candidates who already have one. Although this is not fair, this is the reality in many cases. According toNPR, many employers are saying they do not want to hire those who are out of work.
This situation is shameful but you do not have to let it stop you. There are steps you can take to fight it. You will learn how to make yourself more employable while being out of work.
You should consider being a temp. Sign up with staffing agencies in your area. The more skill and experience that you have and the more flexible that you are, the more opportunities you will have. You will do yourself a favor by being willing to do all types of work and take any assignment offered to you as long as you can get to the location where the assignment is held on time. You can make it easier to get clerical assignments by developing your Word, Excel, PowerPoint, typing and data entry skills. You can put your temp experience on your resume and let your temp agency supervisor be your reference.
You can use your idle time to get more training. You can develop the skills that are discussed in the previous paragraph through classes, books and practice. You can also attend a community college or vocational school to gain skills that pertain to a particular industry that interests you. By taking classes, you can show a potential employer that you are taking advantage of being out of work.
You can also do projects. If you are interested in becoming a graphic designer or artist, you can make your own newsletters and fliers by practicing with the materials you find in your newspaper and elsewhere. If your passion is to create websites, you can design a sample website for a company you want to work for.
You can also use self-employment to show your worth to employers. If you do things such as writing articles and taking surveys, you can point out to employers that you are contributing to society through your input. Bring a few of your articles to your interviews.
