ALT-1 How to Make yourself more Employable

From 3arf

The key to making yourself more employable is to continuously strive to acquire more knowledge, skills, and abilities in an area that interests you or where you are seeking suitable employment. But first regardless of how much more knowledge, skills, and abilities you acquire, no one wants to a job which they don't enjoy. So above all the most important factor in becoming more employable is to find something that you like to do and that is enjoyable. Generally speaking both employees and employers are more satisfied and productive when both parties are satisfied with their jobs.

It is imperative that those seeking employment equip themselves with vital and critical job skills which make them almost indispensable to their employers. Of course we realize that no one is really indispensable, however it is more difficult for an employer to make the decision to terminate or layoff an employee who has skills which are in demand.

Becoming more employable can be accomplished in a number of ways. First, taking advantage of in-house training opportunities or staff development workshops while employed with companies can be very beneficial. By choosing to take advantage of free learning opportunities, you are not only learning new skills but also getting this knowledge with paying a dime for it. This is a win-win situation. You are learning additional skills that can be utilized within your current job, a new position within the same company or an all together new employer should you decide to seek new employment. Whatever the situation may be, one thing is for sure, once you have obtained more knowledge and skills, they are yours to keep.

Second, if you don't have a college degree going back to school is always an option. Because of the many colleges and universities offering degree programs online, almost anyone who wants to get a college degree can. These online programs though sometimes pretty pricey are flexible and convenient and afford the adult learner or those with busy lifestyles the opportunity to pursue their education.

Finally, some companies and organizations have opted to create what is known as corporate universities. For quite some time now organizations have been seeking ways to implement continuous learning in the workplace and corporate universities are the vehicles that have made this possible.

Corporate universities are not places, but rather a concept in learning organizations that are designed to perpetuate the organization. The curriculum is designed for employees at all levels which include professional management development, self-study and on site training offered in conjunction with local universities. Corporate universities are in no way real universities because they do not actually grant degrees. They are merely proactive organizations that are responsible for all training and education within an organization.

In conclusion, making yourself more employable all comes down to how bad you really want it, what you're willing to do to get there, and developing an action plan to propel you into the direction that will give you the desired results.
