The job of the librarian has changed forever because of new technologies. While the library has not been replaced it has become a multimedia and technology center as well. According to CareerPlanner.com the typical job description of a librarian is:“Administer libraries and perform related library services. Work in a variety of settings, including public libraries, schools, colleges and universities, museums, corporations, government agencies, law firms, non-profit organizations, and healthcare providers. Tasks may include selecting, acquiring, cataloging, classifying, circulating, and maintaining library materials; and furnishing reference, bibliographical, and readers' advisory services. May perform in-depth, strategic research, and synthesize, analyze, edit, and filter information. May set up or work with databases and information systems to catalog and access information.”There are many skills required to be a successful librarian.*Ability to adapt to changeLibraries are all about the dispensing information. Nothing has changed more in the last five years than how people get the information they need in all areas of life. This is bound to keep changing. The roles, job duties and expectations for librarians are very fluid. Can that information be sent to the smart phone? Is there a scanner available? Can that book be downloaded with this app?Along with all the new requirements there will be those who need traditional libraries and services. There will be the need to complete all the traditional library tasks.*Strength and flexibilityThis is often overlooked, but ask anyone who has put books away all day, how hard the body works. There are some physical skills that help with the job of being a librarian. They lift, climb, squat and that is just to put "shelf" ten books.

  • Excellent math skillsLibrarians are asked to keep statistics, calculate due dates, fines and other information quickly. Even shelving the books correctly takes math skills.*Ability to learn new technologiesNot only a willingness, but a demonstrated ability to learn new technologies is required. Everyone who is willing to learn may still lack the skills to follow through successfully.*Great communication skillsLibrarians work with the public. This means a librarian needs to have excellent communication skills with all different types of people. They have to be able to come with answers and respond quickly to the needs of the general public.*Trouble shooting skillsOftentimes there are very few people manning a library. This means the librarian needs to be able to trouble-shoot all sorts of issues and come up with workable solutions. This includes working with copy machines, computers and other technical equipment. The librarian is the first fix it man.*Ability to question and evaluate library servicesBecause libraries are in a state of flux, it is important for librarians to analyze and respond to the needs of the people they serve. Perhaps magazine subscriptions and housing physical copies is outdated and costly in some libraries. If the library is housed in an assisted-living center the magazines may be a great option.*Ability to write grants and proposalsFunding for libraries come from a wide variety of sources. The ability to apply for grants and write proposals for funding is not only good for the library, it ensures the librarian will keep the position.There are many skills that will help a librarian be better at the job. Of course, it never hurts to have a love of reading and books.
