How to Beocme a School Librarian in California
Being a school librarian is not about tight hair buns, shushing and severe looks. As a school librarian, you will have the opportunity to introduce kids to the love of reading and adventure of learning. To become a school librarian in California, you will hopefully have a love of knowledge, books and teaching. However, the process of actually becoming a school librarian will require a little more than that.
According to the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing, in order to receive your California Teacher Librarian Services Credential, you must have a bachelors degree from a regional accredited college. A list of approved college programs can be found at the CTC website. You also must have a valid California teaching credential that required the completion of a professional preparation program, including student teaching.
Once you have your teaching credential, you must complete a CTC approved California Teacher Librarian Services Credential Program, and receive a formal recommendation from the uuniversity or college from which it was obtained. You also have the option of completing an out-of-state Teacher Librarian Services Credential Program that consists of at least 30 graduate semester units and is approved by the state where the program was completed.
Finally, you will need to satisfy the basic skills requirement. This usually requires passage of the CBEST, the CSET or the basic skills test from another state if your were prepared out of state.
When you have completed all the requirements for your credential, you then must fill out an application, provide the required documentation, pay the current processing fees and get your fingerprints taken.
Now that you are credential ed to work as a California school librarian, there are several ways you can look for a position as a school librarian. One method is to look on-line. TheCalifornia School Library Associationa website that lists job opportunitiesfor school librarians in California. Another idea is to apply in person. Bring your resume to local school districts and schools. Most hiring happens in the summer, but unanticipated openings can happen throughout the year. . If there are no current job openings, consider volunteering at local schools. This will help you make valuable contacts and you will be the first to know when an opening comes up. You could also become a substitute teacher. This would also help you to get to know the school personnel as well as become better acquainted with the schools.
