What to Wear on an Audition

From 3arf

What you wear to an audition is just as important as the material you choose to show - maybe even more so. From the moment you walk into the room, you are being evaluated. Your outfit is a chance to make a great first impression on your audience. If you want to pack the best punch you can, follow these simple steps:

Know Your CharacterGive yourself an immediate edge, and dress as your character would. Pick a personality trait that you want to play up, and dress the part. Tomboyish? Try pants. Powerful? Maybe a power suit would work for you. Sexy? Cute? Shy? Prudish? Innocent? Wear the right clothing, and you'll fit the part from the moment you walk in. Just don't go overboard and wear a toga to audition for Julius Caesar.

Know Your AudienceOpera auditions traditionally call for nice attire. Musical theatre or straight theatre auditions, on the other hand, might be done in jeans and a trendy blouse. Know who you're auditioning for. Use your best judgment to choose how much jewelry to wear, how much skin to show, and how classic (or trendy) you want your clothes to be.

Know YourselfYour clothes aren't going to look any good if you aren't comfortable. Know your limits, and choose clothing that leaves you feeling and looking great. And ladies, pay special attention to your shoes. If you're planning to wear sky-high heels, make sure to test drive them while singing. They change your breathing mechanism - plus, the higher the heels, the more your knees will knock once you start to get nervous.
