Wearing a Motorcycle Helmet Pros and Cons – Disagree
I have to disagree. Although it is the law and thus we have to abide by it, sometimes I wonder who is thinking of this. I've known quite a few motorcyclist who have wrecked and lived because of the helmet. But those that have either been killed or are now in a quality of life that no one wants is due to wearing a helmet. One that is in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and is in so much pain everyday he says he would have been better off dead, but since some doctor decided to play God and made sure he lived, he only exists day to day. We had a friend that was a police motorcycle officer that an old man pulled out in front of him and our friend was only going 35 mph, hit the car and the helmet snapped his neck. So, the helmet didn't help now did it? I also talked to a neighbor that works in the emergency room at a local hospital and she told me of a motorcycle wreck that came in. They brought in the helmet with the body. Yes, I said with the body. The guys head was still in the helmet, it just wasn't attached to his body. Did the helmet help him or save his life? No. If it sounds like I'm bitter it is because I am. It is a scary thought of riding a motorcycle, no protection around you like in a car, but how many people die in car accidents every day? Maybe we should start wearing a helmet when we are in our cars. Most of the people that are ejected are ejected through the windshield. Their head is slammed into it and pulled back through if they don't go all the way through. There are so many head injuries in car accidents also. I think while we are driving our cars, we should look out for the motorcyclist. When they are splitting traffic (driving between the lanes on a highway when traffic is down to no more than 35 mph, and is legal) don't cut them off, move over so they can get through. It happens to be safer than staying behind a car and taking the chance of being smashed in between them or breathing in the exhaust fumes and taking the chance of passing out. My husband and I have been in that situation. Luckily and because of his years of experience as a driver, we were not injured. A helmet would not have helped us if we were pinned. There are so many pros and cons about this, but since I've been riding with my husband, I have a better appreciation and a better understanding of why motorcyclists do what they have to do to be safe on the road. So, next time you are driving in your car, watch out for motorcycles and be more curtious and understanding towards them. Think about how you can help them so they won't NEED that helmet they HAVE to wear. (not all states have helmet laws that require you to wear one)
