What does New Year mean to you? Or let’s put it this way. What does the first day of the New Year mean to you? Some people like to party late whereas others like to get up early. There are many beliefs associated with the celebrations of New Year ranging from weird and funny to devotional and cute.

Interestingly, not everybody welcomes the New Year with gala parties. You are probably bombarded with hotels announcing grand New Year parties and events. Maybe you have already made plans to go on a trip with friends and family members. And some of you out there must be struggling with sweet messages or SMSes to send to your family and friends. But this New Year's, sit back for a while and rewind to the times when you were a kid. When you were celebrating New Year with Grandma, I bet she told you something unusual and interesting to ring in the New Year.

Well, even in today’s modern times, Grandma's tales are quite relevant if you look at the symbolism behind it and the objective of ushering positive vibes behind those traditions. In fact, there are quite a few of us who still follow certain traditions on New Year’s Eve in order to usher good fortune in the coming year.

The majority of us believe that we should be working in offices on 1st January. Welcome the New Year with respect for hard work and the entire year will be spent being active and fresh.Another one is what you eat on the first day of the New Year is what you would be eating the most the coming year. So take your pick – what’s it going to be this year – fruits, chocolates, salads, granola bars?Keep as many circular things around you as possible. A circle represents an endless journey; no beginning and no end and thus, longevity perhaps.Wear three colors – white for blessings, red for protection from negativity and black for absorbing negative energy.Another practice for ushering positive energy in the home is to light incense sticks, visit a religious place or ring a bell.Break an egg at midnight of 31st December and keep it somewhere safe. See it the next morning and the shape or color will tell you about significant event in your life that is going to happen in the New Year.Although this is not a tradition, yet there are people who welcome the New Year by donating cash or toys or fruits to the less privileged people. This is a noble way to bring positive energy in our lives.
