The Worst new Years Resolutions for your Wallet

From 3arf

These are hard financial times for us all!  When thinking about New Year resolutions, the first thing that pops into mind is not often going to be the cost of the resolution.  While cost will not always be the first thing that a person thinks of, perhaps it should be.  After all, not all resolutions are created equal.

♦  Get Married/Have a Child

Both getting married and having a child are likely two of the very best things that can happen to a person.  Neither one is remotely close to being cheap, though.  Getting married will take expenses for the wedding and honeymoon.  Even if those are a ‘gift’ there is still large expenses involved in setting up a house together.  As for having a child, there are really few things more expensive.  By some estimations raising a child will cost over ½ a million dollars over the next 18 years.  From health care, food costs, lodging, necessities, luxuries and finally possibly college education. Raising a child is far from cheap.

♦  Get Healthier/ Exercise More

Let’s say your goals are a lot simpler.  Maybe the idea is simply to get in shape, eat healthier or exercise more.  Well there are costs involved in that resolution that will also hit your wallet.  It is winter, exercising in wintermay require a gym membership.  Healthy eating may require slightly more expensive lower calories or special foods.  There may be vitamins or even special meals plans that you desire to buy.  These days it is even hard to lose weight without spending some money.

♦  Go Back To School

Going back to school or taking classes to learn a specific topic are amongst the best things that can be done with your time.  Knowledge is one thing that can never be taken away from you.  Let’s face it though, knowledge costs money.  Perhaps with some online training you can get by on a limited amount of money, but almost regardless, learning costs something and if you are actually going back to a formal classroom college, rather than an internet course, that amount can be quite a lot of money.

♦  Are you going to let the New Year attack your wallet?

So it should be obvious that many of the costs of these possible resolutions can be a bit pricey.  For every single one of these choices the plus side may far outweigh the possible negatives.  They should not be ignored simply because of potential costs, no matter how steep the pricing is on these resolutions.  Perhaps one possible Idea would be to go for the resolution of your choice, but at the same time try to do a money saving"green" esolutionalong with it to defray at least a little bit of the costs.
