Summer Camp Jobs for High School Students
The first position which comes to mind when considering summer camp jobs for high school students is usually that of camp counselor. A camp counselor watches over the children during their stay at a designated camp. They make sure they are on time for various activities, follow the rules, eat right, and follow all safety procedures. It is a fulfilling and very important role at any type of camp whether a day or overnight facility. Many skills used at such positions can be used on resumes and may assist teens in deciding what they want to do later in life.
If becoming a counselor does not appeal to a teen or the positions are already filled, there are so many other jobs available in these venues. Some to consider would include:
Lifeguard
Most camps offer some type of swimming and with large numbers of children involved, lifeguards are essential. Teens would need to have swimming experience and also be certified. The local Red Cross would have information on certification and teaching classes for those interested. This job involves a lot of responsibility and intense focus on swimmers and water safety.
Kitchen Helper
Campers have to eat and often camps offer positions in their kitchens. If you like to cook and serve, this would be a wonderful opportunity to develop your skills. Be prepared to peel a few potatoes and wash some pots and pans though. Working in this environment would be a great experience for those interested in culinary or restaurant careers.
Arts and Crafts Aid
The camp curriculum also includes arts and crafts activities. This may be a particularly good fit for teens who wish to pursue a teaching or art degree. Choosing activities and assisting children with projects can be very fulfilling and a lot of fun.
Sports Assistant
Sporting camps with emphasis on tennis, golf, basketball, football, gymnastics or volleyball or a combination of these often need extra bodies on hand to explain rules, demonstrate, and maintain order and discipline. This role would be perfect for teens who excel in sports or wish to pursue a career in coaching. This job would require stamina and attention to detail.
Housekeeping and Laundry Aid
While this may seem rather dull, camps do need help keeping facilities and laundry clean and orderly. This is a great job for introverted individuals who do not require personal contact with others. It is also usually very structured with a set schedule and would have downtime to pursue other interests and activities.
Teens should not stop their job searches when counseling positions are filled or their interests lie elsewhere. There are so many other types of jobs available that are fun, fulfilling and would help supply funds for college or other needs or wants.
