Should Employers Monitor Employees Internet use – No
About a year ago, I was working for a company that watched everything you did on the internet. This company had it own computer department. These employees fixed and replaced the computers in the company that were having problems, but that is not all they did. This job that I had, the computer was a requirement. We worked with their program and occasionally had to get information from the internet.
A lot of times, work load was slow around mid afternoon, and I would jump on the internet and check my e-mail, look at myspace, my bank account, or check out the weather for the week. I never went to any adult or inappropriate sites.
One day, I was called into my boss's office. There were many departments in this company and each department had a manager. He explained to me that he called me in here to discuss my internet usage. I didn't deny using the internet at all during my free time. He went on to say that he thinks that we should not be using it for personal use, just for business. I was fine with that.
I was fine with it, until he kept on explaining to me. He then went on to tell me that this company has the capability of monitoring every web page that anyone visits, everyday. It was then, that he told me how much money I had in my bank account, what my passwords were for my e-mail account and then told me that some of the pictures on my myspace account were funny. How can they legally get all this information. This is the point where I was furious.
How was it right to get all my passwords, to log into my bank account. The bad part is, what could I do. I of course did nothing, because what would it have solved. I did not get on the internet at all after that, and I had a hard time respecting the company I worked for. Not long after that, I found a new company and no longer work with that one.
