Nursing is the art and science of caring. It might be defined technically by manyinstitution, but it is collaboratively defined as a profession for taking good care of people's health, either through prevention of disease, alleviating suffering or promoting health.

Nursesare important people, not only because they are often the firsthealth careprofessional that a sick or injured person sees, but they do their job in all kinds of settings. They help in improving health and wellness to every one from hospital to clinics, from military to community, and even from air to sea. Being a nurse entails lots of responsibilities, especially that they are dealing with lives. To ensure the safety of the individuals admitted in a health care setting, a nurse should possess every important quality to accomplish their job not just professionally but also ideally.

The most important quality for a good nurse is communication. Communication skills are basically needed to any job, but for nurses, it is an essential aspect. A great nurse should have an excellent communication skills, especially in speaking and listening. They should follow instructions without problem and communicate with the patients and families effectively. Nurses should make sure that patient are clearly understood.

Further more, the qualities is divided into three parts. The first part is emotional stability. Being a nurse deals a lot with stressful environment, such as trauma, sickness and death. One should accept suffering and death without getting it personal. A good nurse should be stable enough to separate the duty hours with outside world, as well as, prevent to much attachment to the patients. With out to much attachment, a nurse should be emphatic. Empathy is also an important characteristic of a good nurse. Patients look at nurse as advocates. Great nurses should feel compassion and provide comfort. As what every one said, a nurse is the heart of the hospital.  Not just to the patients, a nurse should also get along well with everyone in the health care setting. A good interpersonal skill is needed to improve the treatment plan with the patient. A good nurse should get along well with her colleagues,doctors,dietitian, technician and other hospital workers, because a patient's treatment plan is collaborative, it needs the help of every hospital staff.

The second part is the physical fitness. Flexibility is needed as a nurse. A great nurse is flexible with regards to working hours and responsibilities. Like doctors, nurses are often required to long period work or overtime, late orgraveyardshifts or even weekends and holidays. Along with flexibility, nurses should always be healthy. Frequent physical tasks, carrying heavy objects or patients and standing for a long period of time are common to nurses. Nurses should maintain their energy towards the shift, either it be in emergency, surgery or just in checking the patients.

The third part is intellectual, in coordination with the theories learned during their student lives. A good nurse is precise and should always pay attention to details. Nurses are dealing with life, they should be very careful in not making any error or mistakes in dealing with the patients. From reading patient's charts and following doctor's order, everything should be checked and managed well. A single mistake could lead to negligence, life is always at stake. When something unintended happens, problem solving skill is a must. A great nurse can think quickly and address problems promptly. That is why nursing interventions are integrated in the treatment plan of the patients. There are simple ways to sooth the patient's problem that only nurses can do. They should also respond quickly to any patient's concern to prevent further harm.
