Jobs in interior design
At first glance, the job choices for an interior designer seem to be limited and very stereotypical. The two main types of design are commercial design and residential design, and for an interior designer that means either designing the interiors of business complexes or the interiors of houses (or mansions in the dream interior design job). Though many jobs within the interior design field fall into these two categories, there are limitless jobs and uses for interior designers.
Interior boat and ship design
Interior designers can be hired for designing the interiors of boats. Whether a yacht or a cruise ship, interior designers are not only capable but ideal for designing the interiors of these floating places of fun. Think of Disney Cruise ships; their interiors are all decorated and designed in part by interior designers.
Set design
Have you ever considered set design? Movies and television shows not only reenact homes and businesses, but they actually need outdoor scenes recreated indoors which takes a very creative person. Everything seen on television and movies is not actually what it seems, and some of the scenes are made up of everything but what it appears to be. Interior designers can serve as set designers.
Home organizers
Some may call it a downgrade, but interior designers are the best organizers available. While not all designers will provide this service, an interior designer in need of work could consider becoming an organizer. When hired the organizer would analyze the space usage of the home or business and determine what storage and organizational units needed to be purchased. The job is detail oriented and in depth, but can improve the productivity of businesses and the ease of home life.
Specialty design services
There are many subset areas of interior design as well. Though many designers prefer to offer all of their services for hire, some may choose to be specialty. Some examples of specialty interior design jobs are as follows: Window treatment specification and design, flooring specification, cabinet or kitchen specification and design, furniture specification and design, and even bathroom specification and design. The list goes on and on, but for any interior need of a home or business, an interior designer can focus on and provide a specified service meeting that need.
If you are considering joining the group of existing interior designers out in the business world, keep your options open and be creative. Often newly graduated interior designers start out at the bottom rung of the totem pole, so be sure to start out where you really want to be. At the same time, be flexible and realize that every new experience is teaching you something about your business. For those of you simply interested in interior design, if you can dream it up an interior designer can help you make it happen.
