Is it right to Force People to Wear Seat Belts
Many people have complained that a law requiring the use of seatbelts is unnecessary and unfair. They argue that their lives are theirs to live, and it is their choice to wear a seat belt or not, even if they get into a car accident and are seriously hurt.
The opponents of seat belt use are adamant about their rights to their body. They say that the state or the government cannot tell them whether they should do something that should be optional or recommended, at best. They argue that they know they might be seriously hurt if they don't wear a seat belt and get into a car accident, but they also say that they can also be hurt as a result of wearing a seat belt during a car accident.
These people complain that seat belts are uncomfortable and they inhibit free movement, which is sometimes needed to drive efficiently and properly.
It is true that seat belts can be an obstacle to driving correctly, especially if the person is short in stature and the seat belt cuts into his/her neck. But, it is also true that seat belts can prevent further damage or harm caused to people in car accidents. Is it right for the government to want to protect its citizens this much?
The laws on seat belt use are much like the laws about suicide. If it is discovered that you tried to kill yourself and you don't succeed in doing so, you are the one who goes to jail. Similarly, if you don't use a seat belt, in the government's eyes you are putting your life at risk if you happen to get into a car accident. The problem is, no one can effectively predict when and if an accident is going to occur.
Most people live their everyday lives not expecting an accident, and most people are able to go home safely. However, for those unfortunate people who do experience a car accident, wearing a seat belt may help prevent a few major injuries. It is up to person, therefore, to gauge this unprecedented risk with the outcomes. It is, essentially, like buying insurance.
Governments, therefore, should not force and fine people who do not wear seat belts. It is up to them, and it is their responsibility, if they want to wear seat belts or not. They will have to balance the pros with the cons, and choose the option that they like best. The government that enacts this kind of law is the "big brother" which not many will like.
