Internships
Before you take an internship, you’ll need to know about your work environment and how the internship can benefit you. The people you work with and the work you do will determine the type of experience you have. If the people are unpleasant or the work is tedious, you should seriously consider another internship at a more enjoyable establishment.
Coworkers
If possible, you should try to get to know your future coworkers before you start work. It is very difficult to work productively in an area where you are treated poorly, harassed, or undervalued. You should talk to the workers or people who know the workers. Sometimes it is possible to research your employer and the business online. If the people are rude or disagreeable, you need to find a new place. Also, remember that working with friends is not always easy. A friend’s companionship can make the workplace more enjoyable, though it will usually diminish your work ethic.
Workplace
Make sure that you are comfortable in the work area. Some people have trouble sitting still for long periods of time. If you are one of those people, an office internship is not for you. A restaurant, store, or laboring job may be more suitable. Also, you should make sure that you will not be expected to stay at a desk or in a lab for long hours with few breaks if that is a problem for you. The most important thing to remember about an internship is that you are there to get experience. If you are too distracted by the environment to learn about the job, you should find a more ideal place to intern
Credits
Make sure that the pay or the school credits you receive are the highest amount for the work you do. If you are looking for a high paying job, you may need to sacrifice some comfort for a job that pays well. Likewise, if all internships will get you the same amount of school credits, pick the one that best suits you. The main point is to make sure that your reward is worth the work.
With an internship, know what you are getting into and the degree of difficulty of the job. Make sure that the people will both encourage and help you to reach your full potential. If the job pays, then check to see if it is fair compensation. At the very least, make sure that you will walk away from the job with some experience.
