If she is the one you want then make it work, nowadays there are so many forms of communication that really it will be just like she is there. The most important part of being a maid of honor is to be there for the bride, to satisfy her very need. She can still do that from where ever she is because we have the Internet, we have instant messaging, we have email, we have telephones and we have mobiles.
When it comes to choosing a dress take some of your friends that live close by and then when you have narrowed it down go on the Internet. Most designers are on-line and you will be able to show your maid of honor your choices. She can help you make the decision.
The same goes for every other decision that has to be made, there are so many business that are on-line nowadays that finding pictures of your choices should be easy. Then your maid of honor can help you decide what you want and how you want things to be. When she knows what you require and the style that you a going for she can even do some research of her own and help with any phone calls that may need to be made.
Usually the bridesmaids and the brides mother get to know the maid of honor during the preparations but as your maid of honor will not be there in person you could set up a type of conference call by arranging everyone to be in one place and then calling the maid of honor on a phone which has loudspeaker. Alternatively you could give your maid of honor everyone's email, IM or telephone details and she could get to know know them herself.
Remember that if your maid of honor did live near by then she wouldn't necessarily be able to drop everything and come round in a crisis. More than likely you would end up speaking to her on the phone, so it's not actually that much different, you can still do that and she can still be involved.
Now to be slightly negative, there are some situations in which this wouldn't work. For example, if you already know that your friend is not the most reliable person in the world, then it is probably not a good idea to make her maid of honor. To make this work you need someone who is going to take their duties seriously. Choose wisely and you should be fine.
On the day itself, your maid of honor will be there looking after you, that is the most important part and the months of long distance communication will all have been worth it, in fact it will probably have made your relationship even closer.
