How to become a Great Employee
Actions always speak louder than words and this is even more true in the workplace. If you want to become a great employee, your actions will say far more about you, than words ever could. Employers are much more impressed by the person who is a great employee, than the person who tells them that he is, but whose actions belie his words. Reasons to become a great employee are individual to the person concerned, but they include better pay, increased job security and a greater chance to advance in their career.
Good employees are punctual, good at their job and they obey company rules and policies. Great employees learn ways to do their work more efficiently and go beyond their job description, at times, to help customers or deal with a situation in a way that reflects well on themselves and their company.
Great employees work well with others or alone. An employer can be sure that a great employee will get the job done whatever it takes. When working alone, the worker accomplishes the task thoroughly, with intelligence, resourcefulness and alacrity. A great worker does not constantly ask his supervisor questions when given a task, although he is not afraid to ask if he does not understand something. A supervisor can trust such a worker to get on with his work with minimal supervision. A great worker knows his job and retains and remembers information.
Although the great worker is confident in his abilities, he is not arrogant or self-centred and works well with other workers. The great worker respects and considers other people’s feelings and is always fair in all his business and personal dealings. Supervisors and colleagues admire and respect the great worker, as do his customers, who recommend the company and the great worker by name. The great worker makes customers feel as though they are honoured guests of the company and remembers their names and their tastes.
The great worker is the person you most want to be working with when there is an emergency. He is cool-headed, thinks clearly, and knows exactly the right thing to do.
The great worker is a professional and whatever his job title always behaves professionally. The great worker’s actions speak louder than his or her words. You do not hear the great worker talking about working; you just suddenly sense him or her beside you quietly beavering away. A wise company will promote a great worker and his or her career will achieve the greatest success.
