Halloween Safety
Halloween can create some safety concerns for home owners regarding the security of their property and the safety of the trick-or-treaters traipsing across it. However, there are a few preparations that a home owner can do to alleviate their concerns, allowing them to relax on this night of tricksters and treaters.
Most importantly the yard needs proper illumination. Porch lights or other yard lights need to be aligned in such a way to provide ample light upon the yard. This way the trick-or-treaters can see where they are going in the dark as they approach and leave your door. The presence of light will also dissuade any would be tricksters from your property as people are less likely to do such things where they can be easily seen.
It is customary to turn off the lights if you do not want to participate in giving out candy. While this may keep trick-or-treaters at bay, it also creates a dark atmosphere for those looking to cause some havoc. If you choose to leave for the night, it may be wise to ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your property in your absence.
Next the yard needs to be free of any obstacles or debris that could hinder people from approaching the porch. The path way needs to be clear of flower pots, yard tools, or any other obstructive objects that could cause one to stumble. Costumes are often long and difficult to maneuver in and see through; therefore keeping a clear path will help their safe navigation.
Any dogs should be secured so that they do not rush the door or escape into the yard while little children are approaching.
Moreover, it is always necessary when passing out candy to have individually wrapped candy. This protects the children from any problems with the candy, and protects yourself from liability. Standing at the door to pass out the candy rather than leaving an unattended bowl on the steps enables you to keep an eye on your property and reduces the chances of anything going awry. Additionally, it gives you an opportunity to meet your neighbors face to face which gives greater stability to the community and safety to your property as people look out for people they know rather than the ones they don’t.
The only costs associated with these steps are the costs of illumination, if your yard is not already properly illuminated, and the cost of candy. Homeowners should have proper lighting on their property year round, thus if that costs is required, do not wait for Halloween to install the lighting. The cost it will save you to be prepared is worth the minimal preparatory costs.
Halloween needs not to be anything to worry about. Utilizing the aforementioned simple precautionary steps can remove all need for concern as you enter this one night holiday.
