Great non Profits for Young Adults to be Involved in
As a young adult there are an infinite amount of opportunities available to you. You have to choose which ones you take advantage of and which you leave behind. One of the opportunities that is available to you as a young adult is to get involved with a non-profit organization. It is recommended you take advantage of this opportunity as you learn a great deal about an area of interest such as education, build character and establish compassion, and experience a great event to add to your resume. There are a lot of local and national non-profit organizations that cater to various needs. Three recommendations of non-profit organizations that young adults should get involved with are included below.
One recommendation for a non-profit organization for young adults to get involved with is Big Brothers Big Sisters. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national mentoring program where bigs are paired up with littles (kids age 5-18). Together bigs and littles do activities that cater to their interest. Big Brothers Big Sisters has volunteers that are only able to commit for a year and volunteers that commit for decades. One of the advantages of this program is that it allows for schedule flexibility. For those who work full-time, you can schedule time with your little during weekends or free time. There is no mandatory requirement on time spent together so it is okay to see you little once a month, if that is all the time you have. For more information, visit the national Big Brothers Big Sisters website:www.bbbs.org. Many local areas also have their own website.
Another nonprofit organization that a young adult can get involved with is Teach for America. Do you have a college degree and a passion to teach our future generation? Teach for America places teachers in some of the most economically disadvantaged schools in the country to teach for two years. Your degree does not have to be education to be selected for this program. Each year, they accept graduates of various programs ranging from history to nursing. One of the benefits of this program is that it can provide a bit of insight to some of the injustices in our current education system. This is certainly a good program to pursue for those who have a passion for education or helping the future generation. For more information, instructions for applying, and deadlines, visit the Teach for America’s website:www.teachforamerica.org
The last recommendation is to serve with AmeriCorps. While AmeriCorps is a government funded program, AmeriCorps members have to opportunity to work with a non-profit organization in a wide range of projects. AmeriCorps positions can range from natural catastrophe clean ups to helping in underprivileged schools or communities. Unlike Teach for America, AmeriCorps does not necessarily require a college degree. However, some of AmeriCorps’ projects may have individual requirements for a college degree. AmeriCorps is constructed into three different programs which you can apply for: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC. Typically an assignment lasts for about a year and may be part-time or full-time depending on the assignment and need. You can get more information and apply atwww.americorps.gov
Becoming involved with a non-profit as a young adult will provide you with some great learning experiences as you continue your journey into adulthood. There are lots of organizations out there, both locally and nationally, but Big Brothers Big Sisters, Teach for America, and AmeriCorps are three great organizations to get involved with.
