Everything there is to know about Tailgating at Florida Gators Games
Americans love their sports, but Florida Gator fans love their team. The Swamp is known for its rambunctious crowds as the Gator Nation floods Gainesville before a big game. Prepare for tailgating ahead of time to make your celebration most enjoyable and worthwhile.
There are two ways you can tailgate. The first way is by camping outside of Gainesville, the closest place being Ocala, and have your tailgate party at the site. Then drive in for pre-game shopping before entering The Swamp. You can choose to camp in a tent, trailer, or go all-out and bring an RV. By camping, you can decorate your site with flags, mats, banners, chairs, tables, cups, bowls, lights, etc to let everyone there know what team you are rooting for. Considering they'll all have their sites decorated to the nine's with Gator paraphernalia, make sure you are a Gator fan, too. If you have a motorcycle or scooter, you can easily go into the city later and slip into a small "parking" spot anywhere on campus. Otherwise, head in earlier in a truck or SUV so you can bump up over a curb and grab a spot closer to the stadium.
The other way you can tailgate is to arrive on campus early in the morning, especially if it is an afternoon or early evening game, and stake your claim quickly. Find a spot near some grass, park your car so the trunk is easily accessible from your chosen spot, and set up camp. Again, set out your banners, flags, tents, chairs, tables, cups, and plates quickly so no one steals your spot.
Whether you are camping outside of the city or drive in to tailgate all day, make sure you have ample supplies. You'll need finger foods so your group can walk and talk. Finger food also mean you should supply plenty of napkins. Bring a variety of drinks because it is always hot and humid at The Swamp. Consider bringing personal, battery-powered fans to keep you cool. Otherwise, the many Gator shops always have paper fans made from Gator heads with which you can manually fan yourself. Decorate your car and your site in as much orange and blue as possible to win over your neighbors.
To pass the time, bring plenty of games. Card games, board games, Frisbee, football, baseball, kickball, etc. There is too much time on your hands to just sit around and sweat. Also, a portable stereo helps keep the party going and you won't waste precious car battery. Whether you tailgate for the long-haul or join in midday, there is always plenty of time on your hands to get up and wander around...right into any of the numerous Gator shops. So, don't forget to bring cash, or purposely choose not to bring any.
One final tip is to pack up all tailgating materials right before you head up to the stadium. Either that, or plan on sitting at your site for many more hours after the game as you wait for the traffic to die down.
Enjoy your tailgating at The Swamp and Go Gators.
