Delivering Newspapers
It may seem like a simple pocket money job for a young person, but delivering newspapers can be a way to learn some important life lessons. Many teenagers have a paper round to earn some extra cash. The benefits of learning about work in this early way cannot be understated.
Commitment
Anyone delivering newspapers will have to make a formal agreement, or commitment, to doing so with their employer. This is often the very first such agreement a young person makes. It teaches them that there will be consequences if they do not uphold that commitment. It also encourages them to think carefully before agreeing. They must understand that it is not something they can do, say, for a few days and then stop.
Timekeeping
Delivering newspapers is usually either an early morning or early evening job, and sometimes a delivery boy or girl will work both times of the day. They may also have to work at the weekends. Because people expect to have their newspapers delivered in time to be read over breakfast, or to be taken to work, or be ready for when they get home from work, timekeeping is essential. No on wants to read yesterday's news tomorrow.
It is also important for paper boys and girls to know the time it will take them to complete their round so that they can be ready for school or any other activity that follows. They may need to learn to allow extra time during inclement weather conditions such as snow or fog.
Finances
While few paper boys and girls actually collect money from their customers, most will be paid for the work they do. This small amount of money is invaluable as a tool to teach financial awareness. They can decide what to spend their money on, or how to save for some large purchase. It can provide an opportunity to open a bank account and learn about interest and account management.
Responsibility
Delivering newspapers comes with a certain amount of responsibility. The paper boy or girl must make sure they are at work on time and then wherever they need to be afterwards on time too. They must make sure the right newspapers arrive at the right customers, including any special requests to fold or deposit the newspaper in a certain way or location.
Newspaper delivery personnel are also an advertisement for the newsagent who employs them. They carry the name of the newsagent on their delivery bag and people will remember those who are less than courteous.
Good manners
Finally, delivering newspapers can be a way for young people to learn and develop their good manners as well as other social skills. Saying “please” and “thank you” goes a long way, as does a smile. Paper boys and girls often find they are treated to a tip around Christmas by customers who appreciate their service during the year. Those who deliver newspapers with a pleasant demeanour will undoubtedly receive better tips that those who simply throw the newspapers onto the lawn each morning as they ride past.
Delivering newspapers can teach young people a number of lessons about the adult world of work. It is a good way for teens to begin to manage their own money, and also a great way for them to get some exercise each day.
