Pros and Cons of Delivering Pizza

From 3arf

So many of us have a love affair with pizza. We love to go down to the local pizzeria for a slice or an entire pie, yet somehow it always tastes better when we have it delivered. We know that pizza delivery saves us a lot of time and energy, but do we really consider what the job is like for the person who does it? Of course, few would deny that we feel a little flutter of excitement when the delivery person arrives at the door, but once we receive our pizza, we most likely give little thought to who delivered it. The truth of the matter is that the pizza delivery person is a hard-working individual who has a job comprised of many positive aspects, but also a few negative ones as well.

The following are a few of the pros and cons of the pizza delivery business:

- Tips

Tips fall under the categories of both pros and cons for obvious reasons. Some people are great tippers, while others are not. Often, when a delivery fee is included in the price of the pizza, people do not feel that they have to provide the driver with an additional tip. However, it is important to keep in mind that individuals who deliver pizza are either independent contractors for a particular pizzeria, and therefore do not make an hourly wage, or, if they work within the establishment itself, are required to clock out for deliveries. This means that they rely solely on the tips that they receive when delivering. We actually do them a disservice if and when we fail to tip them. Furthermore, the drivers are usually using their own vehicles, for which they are not paid for gasoline. All of these factors result in a lot of driving for very little pay at the end of the day.

- Safety

Much like any other occupation which requires that a person carry and receive a sometimes large amount of cash, pizza delivery can be dangerous, depending, of course, on the area in which the driver is delivering. Even still, safety must always be a priority. The majority of pizzerias ensure that their drivers do not carry more than a certain amount of money, but there are other safety concerns to consider as well. For example, drivers must continually be aware of their surroundings, and lock their vehicles when leaving them in order to approach the doorway of a home. Criminals tend to target pizza deliverers not only for cash, but also for their cars.

- Vehicle Wear and Tear

Drivers who are required to deliver in their own vehicles also have to take into consideration the wear and tear on their cars that will inevitably occur. This will be more of a concern for drivers who work for pizzerias that do not have a specific mileage limit on where they are willing to deliver to. Drivers who deliver within a small area will have far less to worry about. Nevertheless, the vehicles must be kept in good condition, and the maintenance must be kept up-to-date.

- Time Considerations

There are certain pizzeria owners who prefer to hire only one driver, and they may also require the driver to be constantly on call during the hours of operation. Drivers might also be asked, if they do not live within close proximity, to stay at the pizzeria and wait for deliveries to be called in. This results in a sole driver who has little free time to his or herself, and is not paid for his or her time on call.

Anyone who is considering delivering pizza as employment can be assured that, at times, it can be extremely profitable. However, there are also many drawbacks which do not make it an ideal job. Also, now that we are aware of the realities of the job, those of us who have pizza delivered on a regular basis might have more appreciation for the individuals who perform this often over-looked job so well.
