Best Motorcycle Helmets
Motorcycle helmets are a personal thing and come in 3 main types. These are open face, full face or flip up type.
Made by Davida in England, a good helmet is based on a traditional style of helmet popular in the 1950s and 1960s. It is hand made with a leather and silk interior and is very comfortable but the drawback is it doesn't fit everyone, you have to have the right head shape for them. The big advantage with the open faced helmet is the fact that you are able to see from it very easily, an unobstructed view, but it has the disadvantage of no eye protection. You therefore have to wear goggles or glasses with it. But this means you have vary the look via different goggles/glasses. Popular with cruiser type motorcyclists.
The open flipped helmet is popular as it allows you to have the enclosed type, open type or semi allowing you to have the best of both worlds. This is a popular style with the British police who wear BMW helmets. These have the eye protection and are also much quieter to wear than open faced helmet. But they can be heavy due to the mechanism of opening. I had a Nolan version of this and found it to be very comfortable for all day use. Popular with sports touring motorcyclists and also the Police.
The full faced helmet is the helmet most people seem to go for with such makes as Nolan or Aria being the two most popular. These give you a restricted view and are better suited for the race track where you aren't having to look around as much as when you are traveling on the general highway. Also they can be prone to the visor steaming up but are normally one of the quieter type of helmets to wear. Popular with sport bike riding motorcyclists.
You must try on the potential new helmet for both fit and weight as it is going to be your lifesaver in an accident. If possible go for helmets that are ACU (auto cycle union) gold seal approved for racing as these will be of a much higher quality than the green label versions. But the green label ones will be fine for occasional use such as those used for passengers.
It is all down to personal opinion on which is the best helmet as different types of helmet are better suited to some styles of riding than others.
