Bad Bosses

Worst types of bosses: And how to handle them

Do you know what the worst bosses are? Do you have one? Here are some of the worst bosses you can hope not to work for, along with some pointers on how to handle them!

The Angry Guy:

Uh, ok we can hear you, please don’t scream at me like that! Bosses that yell are simply out of control. When people have anger, it comes from an insecure place. You almost want to send them for a little time out!

The best way to handle this is to get out of the way if at all possible. The angry boss will yell at anyone that comes in their direction so make your self scarce if at all possible. If that is impossible, simply let the baby have his little temper tantrum and always keep your cool. The angry boss may be looking for a fight. Don’t get sucked into trying to have a verbal altercation when the angry guy is in the middle of the melt down.

In fact, the less you say the better. Let the tirade run it’s course and most of the time, the angry guy will fizzle out and move on, until the next bomb goes off.

The Scatterbrain:

Who is hiring these people? They must know someone! There is no way this person is in anyway competent to do the job! Sometimes, you see the new boss and wonder to yourself, why? You can get more than a little perturbed and think to yourself, I can’t get promoted, but Bozo here has a job making more than me?

Well really, it is out of your hands. Not really much more you can do than accept the fact that this weirdo is the boss and you should make the best of it. Be supportive, and make the best of the situation. Nothing is forever, or at least you can hope!

The Blamer:

This is the boss that takes no accountability for their actions! They find blame to place on everyone but themselves. They are great at pointing out all the things you do wrong, and rarely if ever tell you that you did a good job!

Watch out for these people, they will throw their own mother under the bus to get themselves ahead! Do your job, keep documentation, and always be ready to deflect their darts!

The Workaholic:

Nothing wrong with being a hard worker, but some people just don’t have a life! They work themselves like dogs and accept nothing less from the rest of the pack!

Having great organization skills can help with this type of boss. Have a daily planner and make an action plan each day. When you accomplish your work you can turn this in and punch out! When the workaholic sees you have a plan, and have accomplished so much, it may ease the burden a bit.

Also, do not be afraid to stand up for yourself. If you have made plans to go to your son’s baseball game, give the workaholic reminders. Do not wait until 5 minutes before you have to leave, let them know head of time!

The Abuser:

No good excuse for an abusive boss!

There are laws that employers must follow! If you are being sexually harassed, or treated abusively, you must go over your bosses head and report it. Follow the chain of command and report the abuse to the company. You may go to your bosses supervisor, or human resources. If you are not satisfied, and the problem continues to exist you can file a complaint with the EEOC.

Perhaps the situation is very difficult and not worth it! Try getting another position, with another company if you have to. Life is too short to have to put up with that, and your mental health is more important than any job!
