Avoid Temp Agencies – No

Definitely not. If a job seeker goes to an employment agency because he/she sees a job that a person likes, they automatically assume that they will get that job. The answer is FALSE. I remember just graduating out from my community college and I went to seek some advice from a career counselor. He asked me what type of job I was looking for. I told him I want to work in an office type setting to perform clerical work. He told me to go through employment agencies and that they specialize in this type of work. Here I am just a college graduate with no real work experience to my name and he tells me to go in and apply.

I saw a job posting that I like through OfficeTeam website that mentioned a file clerk. I was thinking hey this would be a great job for me because I was seeking an entry level position and who doesn't know how to file or know their alphabet anyway. I posted my resume on their website and faxed over my resume. I had a recruiter "interview" me the next day. The recruiter I talked with went over my work experience and asked what type of position I was looking for. I told her that I sent in my resume for the file clerk position. She mentioned to me that the position was filled. She then asked me if I had any "real" work experience. I was only an intern for the League of Women Voters for six months. She told me that wasn't good enough for the assignments that they had.

I had to have at least a year of work experience. All she could send me was filing assignments (which wasn't that many). After I finished that one, the division director called me up telling me to work at another assignment (which was a set assignment.) This assignment would only happen the third Monday and Tuesday of every month. That was all this agency had for me because of my lack of experience. The only reason I received this assignment was because of my ethnic background. The company that hired this agency wanted someone who speaks Chinese fluently. The division director told me that this was the only assignment I will be getting from her agency because of lack of work experience. They can only help people who worked in a company for a year or more and lost their jobs.

So, why should a job seeker go through taking tests and interviewing if the agency would not give them any work? It doesn't take any work experience to file or do mailings! Anyone can do this type of work because it is simple. What about people who just graduated from college with no work experience? They won't help these people find work either. All lies.
