Of course you do not want to spend so much that they get the wrong idea about you possibly being interested in them again. Make sure that your gift does not inadvertently portray something romantic
You do not want your ex to read something into the gift that is simply not there. To that end, you may want to stay away with items that have hearts on it. Men might want to be careful about getting a gift of jewelry for their ex since that is what many people get for their current significant others.
You will also want to think about this when giving the card with the gift. You may be accustomed to writing sweet messages, but do not overstep the boundaries. Just because you always used to say that you loved him (and maybe still do) does not mean that you should say that now that you are no longer together.

Some people are passive aggressive and may actually pick out a gift that will somehow be negative for a person. For instance, you know someone is on a diet so you get them a box of chocolates. If you do not want them to get a gift, then do not, but make sure that you are not inadvertently doing something unkind.
