ALT-4 Careers Handling the Revolving Door above you

From 3arf

"What is your name again?" This is a common question from employees to managers these days. The revolving door in middle management will keep the office cool in temperature, but hot with pressure. Not folding under that pressure is your job security defined.

First and foremost, when your bosses disappear into the magical cavern of downsizing or the abyss of incompetence, do your job. The secret to tenure is always doing what is expected of you. If this happens to change on a daily basis, knowing your boss's boss is probably a good idea. You will be getting current assignments rather than the assignments your newest boss either cannot or will not complete.

If the boss behind door number two needs some training, lend a hand. You are the one with the corporate culture in your back pocket that she may be lacking. This does serve a dual purpose: A) Your boss may actually last more than one pay period; B) Your boss may note that your assistance is above and beyond the call of duty on your evaluation.

Thirdly, do not teach your new boss by making foolish example of your last. Denigrating your boss' predecessor will only make him leery of your loyalty. He will wonder if you are not the one feeding him the mistakes that will land you his job.

Lastly, know that the truest corporate truth is that the only constant is change. Managers will come and go, but the employees who make the company will remain. They are the foot soldiers who march to whichever company drum beats for the day.

The best offense is a good defense. Do you job to the best of your ability. Every manager wants and needs to have employees just like you.
