ALT-2 What’s Wrong with our Companies Today
You received a call from a potential employer who was very interested in your abilities and your skills. You attend the interview. The interview goes well. It seems to be a great fit. Finally after a few days the company phones you and you have secured the job. Finally you can pursue your career goals. The last company you worked for didn't take full advantage of your skills. Maybe this one will.
It doesn't take long to discover that your presumption was wrong. It was as if the employer forget everything that he or she asked you at your interview. Questions such as "What have you've been doing the past few years?" and "What type of training have you had?" and finally "Where do you see yourself in five years?. "Apparently not here", Is what you would probably answer if only they'd ask you now. This is one of many ways that seemingly great companies create environment that is counterproductive, negative and many cases hostile. You don't have to have a background in economics to discover that this is not good for the bottom line.
I worked for two fortune 500 companies and they embodied some of the same inefficiencies mentioned as smaller companies with moderate yearly profits. Most of the problems can be solved if they hired the managers using the same scrutiny that they used in hiring you. Many companies have managers who don't have a clue of where to place employees, What the strengths of each employees is, or what would be best for the company. Many employees are in positions that they haven't been hired nor trained for. Or the manager has hired his or her friends to fill positions which were created. Thereby causing a plethora of inadequacies.
The company suffers because it isn't getting the most from the employees that it could. One employee thinks "Why should I try harder when the supervisor gives all the privileges to certain employees. Another, is jealous because they were passed up for promotion and now serves in a position that is uncomfortable. Finally there's the employee who is always attempting to be the center of attention. Who is ambitious, smart and experienced but wants to win at all costs. Employing a observant supervisor would help in managing these vast amount of problems.
It is important to note that some have concluded that many companies have sought to encourage bad work environments in an effort to stay in control of them. Maybe there are a few, but if most companies would do a thorough evaluation of themselves they would make massive changes.
As long as the company is making profits and the quota's are being met the company has no motivation to seek out problems and solve them. If the shareholders are happy everything is status quo.
The travesty of all of this caught in the middle is the employee who took a job because they thought they would make a difference. What kind of impact has this caused on his future job performance with different companies?. Has it caused them to the conclusion that all companies are the same?. Or maybe the should transform themselves to be the one with the unconcerned attitude. It is important that every employee has a since of self worth. Maintaining your integrity should continue to be your ultimate goal. Accolades are not what should be sought after because that could vary depending upon the person. Knowing that you've done the best you could possibly do makes you stand out and if not shoot for supervisor and help solve the problems which is common in todays workplace.
