Every day, when millions of people check their email, one of the first things they do is highlight mass marketing email, delete it or mark it as spam. There are times, however, when the subject line catches your eye and you open it and read it. An email marketing manager was responsible for your attention to that particular mass marketing email.

Email marketing manager is a rapidly growing, entrepreneurial position. An email marketing manager isresponsiblefor using email to market a company’s services and goods through gathering lists of email contacts, composing marketing letters and handling customer feedback. They must identify the market for a product or service and then develop strategies on communicating these products or services. The email marketing manager works with the advertising and marketing teams to plan and synchronize an overall e-mail marketing strategy for the company. An email marketing manager cultivates relationships with customers, and must work with email service providers.

A person entering this career must have great social networking skills, must excel in critical thinking, must be a team player, thrive on challenge, possess innovation and creativity, have leadership and organizational skills, and communication skills that go beyond advertising while respecting and speaking in an one-on-one style.Seth Godin, author of “Permission Marketing” is quoted as saying, “Email is the most personal advertising medium in history.”

To enter the field of email marketing management, abaccalaureate degreein business administration with specialization in sales and marketing is required. A baccalaureate degree in computer science or information technology is also acceptable. College degrees should then be supplemented with professional training in e-marketing with an emphasis in HTLM. Some companies require a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the top college programs in the country. Curriculum includes courses in economics, statistics, public speaking, creative writing, advertising, marketing principles, and integrated marketing communications. In addition, a minimum of two internships is recommended.

An email marketing manager must possesscommunication/writing skills, consultant selling skills, analytical and negotiating skills and strategic marketing skills. Judgment calls must be made on a regular basis. It is important to attend seminars and conferences where email marketing managers can share their knowledge and learn from their peers. The ultimate goal of the email marketing manager is to increase the customer base, and foster relationships with established customers to increase revenue for their employer.

As of May, 2011, The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that marketing managers earned an averageannual wageof $126,190 in the United States.
