How to Find the right Career that Fits your Skills Abilities and Interests
Many of us find that after several years of working in a certain career, the light has gone out in our eyes and we find that what used to be a good job is no longer the right fit for us. If you are not happy in your present career, there are various things you can do to find a career that you truly love. If you are willing to keep an open mind and do a bit of homework, you will discover that a whole new swimming pool of life is out there just waiting for you to dive in.
First, make a list of all the tasks you perform in your present job. From this list of job tasks, put a circle around the tasks you enjoy doing. Even if you only have one or two tasks that are enjoyable to you, this is still a good start towards finding the career that is right for you. Don't stop at your current job. Keep goin and try to recall every job you have ever held. Once you write down all the tasks you enjoyed, brainstorm different careers that would allow you to do these tasks on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, if there is nothing you love to do in your current or past jobs you will have to do some additional exploration to find out what you truly love to do. This could mean volunteering at a local charity or club. Be careful to choose a volunteer position that is different from you 9 to 5 job. You need to step outside of your comfort zone if you'r really going to explore your likes and dislikes.
If you believe that the time demands of your current job are stopping you from volunteering, take heart. There are many volunteer positions that only require a few hours a week. And the opportunities are endless. You could walk dogs from you local animal shelter, prepare and serve food at a food kitchen, or become a big brother or a big sister. THe choice is up to you.
Charlene was a daycare worker who was unhappy with most parts of her job. The days seemed to drag on forever and there was an endless supply of dirty diapers to change. However, when she subbed for the afterschool care program when they were short-staffed she discovered that she like working with school-aged kids. And Charlene remembered that in her past job working for a catering company, she had enjoyed doing food deliveries in the company van.
About a year later, she was at a local fair and she met a recruiter for school bus drivers. The job of shcool bus driver was a perfect fit for Charlene because it combined driving a large vehicle with caring for school-aged kids. Charlene's career turned form drudgery to a delight.
