ALT-2 3 Reasons that you are Failing in your Attempts to Change Careers
Changing careers can be a great opportunity, and it can an equally great challenge. For some people, attempting to change careers seems to bring nothing but failure and frustration. This need not be the case, however, if a person is aware of the potential challenges that are the causes of most of these troubles. There are three primary reasons that people fail in their career change attempts.
1-Lack of Education or ExperienceWhile having big dreams is a wonderful thing, it is also important that a person has realistic ones. For instance, a person who wants to go from being a banker to a lawyer is not going to be able to just make the leap from career to career because these are extremely differing jobs with differing skills and abilities. If you desire a career change that is extreme, you may need to expand your education before you make that change. If you don’t take the time and resources to do this before trying to make your career move, you are likely going to fail, whether because you can’t find employment or because you start your own venture that you aren’t knowledgeable enough in to make a success of.
2-Lack of Support from FamilyFor many people who are changing careers, there are other people in the home who are going to be affected, whether negatively or positively, by the change right along with them. There are spouses, sons, daughters, and sometimes other people, who will have an opinion about the career change and the effect that this is going to have on the household, especially regarding time and finances. For some individuals, there is a tremendous amount of support, but when there’s not, it can make things very difficult and stressful when it comes to an attempted career change.
3-Lack of Financial StabilityIt can be a frightening prospect in the area of finances to start a new career and for good reason. When there is not a financial reserve in the household to fall back on, a person is placed in a “do or die” position. The stress of that alone can cause problems when it comes to the career change. There may also be money needed to even get going in the career. There can be licensing fees, uniform expenses, technical supplies, tools, or any number of other things that are needed for success. If you are starting a solo venture, there will also be the need to advertise so that potential customers are aware of your services offered. Without the savings and/or capital behind you, your new venture is more likely to fail by far than if you had financial reserves to pull you through the initial stages.
When a person is contemplating a career change, especially one that is a bit riskier than just switching companies or positions within a company, it is important to have certain things in order prior to taking the plunge. Three of te most important things are finances, education/experience, and support from others who will be affected. Having these things in place will help to ensure that your career change leads to success and satisfaction, rather than failure and unhappiness.
