ALT-1 Skills Needed to become a Firefighter
Firefightersare idolized and considered everyday heroes by many. Small children dream of growing up and becoming firefighters. But what skills must one obtain to become a good firefighter?
There are numerous skills a good firefighter must have. There is a certain level of training and education that is mandatory for firefighters. However, there are a few skills that stand tall amongst the rest, that turn a good firefighter into a great firefighter.
Team Work:
A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. A team is much like the proverbial chain. A poor team player, regardless of talent, will only hurt the team.
A firefighter is part of a close knit team. At all times a firefighter must remember his place and know that others are relying on him. Firefighters must work well with others and be humble enough to be exceptional team players.
Physical Fitness:
One of the most important skills a firefighter can obtain is to keep physically fit. The nature of the job takes strength and endurance. A firefight is required to lift and carry several pounds of heavy equipment on eachcall.Many obstacles may arise during a call that will require the firefighter to be in good shape. A firefighter not at peak physical fitness will not be able to perform the job and puts himself, his team and many others in danger.
Communication:
Firefighter must be able to communicate clearly and effectively. Communication between team members is extremely important. Team members must know what the other team members are doing and where they are at all times as a safety precaution.
Firefighter must also be able to communicate efficiently with other people not on their team. As an authority figure they must be able to communicate clearly in times of high stress. People will look towards firefighter for advice and leadership. Effective communication is key when it comes to safety.
Dedication:
It takes great dedication to be a firefighter. Every day brings new dangers and potential life threatening emergencies. A firefighter must be dedicated and hard working to succeed in his chosen field.
Without teamwork, physical fitness, communication and dedication a firefighter could find himself helpless in a life threatening situation. A firefighter needs to quickly acquire these skills and practice them every day for his safety and the safety of those around him. With a little perseverance and hard work a firefighter can easily climb the professional ladder and excel in everything his does.
