ALT-1 Mystery Shopping Costs

From 3arf

Mystery shopping is fun, but in most cases not especially lucrative. For that reason, it is wise to consider the upfront costs before starting. These include registering with a shoppers' organization, obtaining specialized equipment, and incurring transportation costs.

There are organizations that provide valuable services to mystery shoppers such as certification and job listings. Being a gold or silver certified shopper can lead to more employment, as recruiters will know you are serious about doing a good job. Shoppers at this level also get first choice of many jobs. The job listing is truly valuable, as many recruiters and mystery shopping companies use this service to connect with shoppers.

Equipment needed for mystery shopping includes a computer, both for getting assignments and for reporting the results of your assessment. Other requirements are a digital camera, a fax machine and/or a scanner to download receipts and copies of proof of visit such as business cards, and a printer to print instructions and the questionnaires that record your shopping experience. A stop watch is required for many shops that ask for to-the-second timing during a visit. You must have the ability to get on-line and check your email daily. Specialized shops may require video equipment or recording devices. You need a reliable car.

Most mystery shoppers work in areas close to home, because the cost of gas and the wear and tear on your car need to be taken into account. If you are not careful, you will end up working for a pittance an hour after expenses. Wise scheduling of shops close to each other can cut the cost of each individual visit. Keeping a mileage log will make you eligible for tax deductions based on miles driven for business reasons.

Of course, there are positive aspects to mystery shopping as well. Some shops pay extremely well, some are in places that you would go anyway and may include reimbursement for items that you would ordinarily buy, and some are just worth it in terms of fun. One very real benefit is that mystery shoppers can claim a large part of their Internet hook-up costs as business expenses. Another is that your resume is available to many companies and you may be offered a 'real' job.

As long as you weigh the costs and the rewards and decide you will come out ahead, mystery shopping can be a rewarding way to spend free time and make money, too.
