ALT-1 Motorcycling Taking get Lost Rides
Ride to Live, Live to Ride. What a great slogan huh? Every time I fire up my bike I can feel the need to escape from myself, my problems, my stress and the current world in which we live. The opportunity to get lost even if only for a few hours is one that stirs me in ways that I don't feel when behind the wheel of a "cage" (biker slang for cars) even though I build custom vehicles for a living and have an excellent pick of anything I want to drive.
The allure of two wheels, asphalt and sometimes dirt (I ride a dual sport bike that can go off road in addition to being comfortable on the street) is a unique feeling, some people get the rush from jumping out of planes, or riding roller coasters but for me slinging a leg over the saddle of a motorized steed is one that never gets old.
From the time I pull a full faced helmet on and gear up to get away the endorphins kick in and away I go, pointing the bike at some far off landmark and concentrating on the road right beneath me, taking in the sights, sounds and smells (good and bad) connects you to a different life even for a short time. Being on a bike and taking that cruise to no where is all about getting your head straight, you cant think about anything else but what you are doing otherwise you'll wind up thinking about it in the hospital or worse.
Getting lost isn't about being somewhere you cant get back from, it is exactly about being somewhere that you need to be so you can get back. You'll get back your sanity, a fresh perspective and a renewed spirit of knowing you can get lost without having to pack for it.
If you haven't done it yet this week, go now and get lost in your helmet, take an hour or two and when you come back it will have been the best "vacation" you've had in a while.
Once you have mastered the "get lost mini vacation ride" start planning a three-day weekend around it and really clear your head. Now go get lost!
See you out there.
