ALT-1 How to have a Green Halloween
Going green for Halloween may not be at the top of most kids' concerns, but it can be for the grown ups; it can also be both environmentally friendly and a money saver.
Decorations for Halloween normally consist of jack-o-lanterns, plastic spooky creatures and sometimes outdoor lights. Most of these non-perishable decorations will last for many years if taken care of properly. Lighting can go green through the use of low voltage LED bulbs. Some of the best decorations are those that are natural such as Indian corn, gourds and pumpkins. The corn can be kept in a cool place in a plastic bag and used for several years. As for the pumpkins, real pumpkins can be decorated with markers and paint in lieu of carving. This preserves them if they are kept out of extremely hot areas, and after Halloween, they can be used to make pies. The seeds are also a treat when roasted. Most children are more concerned with what they are collecting on trick or treat night than the actual costume they are wearing. However, it is still fun to create a one of a kind creation from materials found around the house. This is not only a money saver, it keeps down the consumption of plastics and provides a fun and creative experience for the whole family. If the community has a costume swap area, this is an ideal solution for providing kids with new costumes every year at no cost whatsoever. Trick or treat bags can be anything from the old favorite plastic pumpkin that will remain usable virtually forever, to a cloth grocery bag made from recycled materials.Contrary to popular opinion, there are many treats that can be given out that are not sugary, sweet, or full of preservatives. While it isn’t encouraged to give out homemade goodies in many areas, popcorn, trail mixes, and other goodies are available. For at home parties, there are no end of healthier snacks that can be served.Every year, gallons of gas are used by parents ferrying their children from street to street and town to town, gathering goodies. In this day and age, this is not only extremely expensive, but dangerous. Confining your child’s trick or treating to their own neighborhood within walking distance, is not only a safer solution, it can save gallons of precious gas, eliminate a lot of pollution, and provide for much less congested streets. With a little thought and planning, virtually every holiday can become greener, and in the process, healthier and more fun.
