ALT-1 How to ask for a Raise

From 3arf

Asking for a raise can be a daunting task. Even if you feel like you deserve it and you are past due, it still can be difficult to go up to your boss and ask for such a thing. There are different tips that can make this less painful and increase your chances of success.

First, it is important to carefully consider the timing of when you ask for your raise. You do not want to pick a time when your boss is busy and overwhelmed. You also do not want to choose a time when something has gone wrong, especially if you hold any culpability. If you are having a review, then this might be a good time to ask. Otherwise, you may want to ask your boss about scheduling a time that is convenient to him. If you do not want to do this then just choose a time when he is not too busy and in a good mood.

You should also consider who to ask for the raise, if you have a choice. Some people have multiple bosses. Of course choose the one who you think would be most receptive.

Go in prepared when you ask for the raise. You should come up with reasons as to why you deserve and/or need a raise. For instance, you could talk about how it has been three years without a raise. You can talk about how you have done a good job and earned money for the firm. You can talk about how your rent has come up or how you have that new baby on the way.

You should be earnest but confident when you go in to ask for the raise. Do not act jittery and nervous but do not go in demanding a raise. You should go in and calmly explain the situation. Try to get your boss to understand and feel sympathetic for your position. Certainly do not threaten him or her. Even if he or she would have been inclined to give you a raise, many would just as soon let you go if you tell them you will walk without a raise.

If he or she cannot give you a raise then he or she might be willing to do something else. For instance, he or she may be tied on how much money he or she can give but might be able to extend your vacation time.

It is difficult to ask for a raise but if you do it right you will have a better chance of success. No matter what his or her response, stay civil the entire time so that you can make a logical decision on your next move.
