How do you ask your Boss for a Raise

From 3arf

Hard work and dedication deserve recognition, however, asking for it is not always easy. Whether your boss is stern or easy to talk to, it can be very difficult to ask for more money. In these tough economic times, you may even feel guilty for asking for a raise. There is no reason to feel guilty. Everyone has bills to pay, if you need a raise, ask for it. You will never get ahead by being a wall flower and keeping silent. Remember, the worst thing your boss can say about a raise is "No." If this happens, continue doing a good job and ask again a later date.

This article is going to offer a few tips and suggestions on how to ask your boss for a raise.

  • Proof. When you ask to speak to your boss about a raise, make sure you have proof of your hard work. This proof can come in many forms. For example: written records of completed projects, rise in sales on your shift, etc. You could also bring in a written recommendation from co-workers and/or supervisor(s).
  • Confidence. Walk in and conduct yourself with self-confidence. There is nothing wrong with knowing you are good at your job. Look your boss in the eye and tell them why you feel you deserve a raise. Take note that there can be a fine line between self-confidence and being arrogant. No one wants to listen to you brag about yourself.
  • Tact. Choose your words carefully. The worst thing you can do is come across as though you are making demands. When you make demands, it can sound like an ultimatum. Most employers will not respond favorably to being given an ultimatum. On the other hand, you do not want to sound like you are begging either. You should not have to beg for for well-deserved recognition. Explain why you feel you deserve a raise and back that reason up with proof and self-confidence.

These are just a few suggestions on how to ask your boss for a raise. It can be very frustrating to work hard and feel unappreciated. Try to keep in mind that bosses may be feeling the same way. Think about how hard they work to keep their part of your company running nice and smooth. The point is, try not to assume that your boss ignores all your hard work. Bosses may have a lot on their plate and need a friendly reminder of your contributions to the company.
