ALT-1 How to Make Driving less Stressful

From 3arf

Because driving requires so much of your attention, it can be stressful, especially if you are commuting large distances. Fortunately, technological advancements can relieve some of your stress. Some of the options may be expensive, but many of them are affordable and worthwhile, since they can keep you upbeat and happy while you drive.

Satellite radio

Several years ago, satellite radio was for the "well-off" portion of society. It was a relatively new concept, although cell phones have used satellites before, too. Thankfully, the rates per month to have satellite radio in the car were decreased dramatically, and the "average Joe" can now afford to listen to these special stations, brought to the general public by Sirius and XM.

Listening to the music and to the people whom you like is better than having to grumble at listening to music that you don't like. When there's music on that you enjoy, you will likely forget about your worries.

Remember, however, that these distractions can help decrease your ability to drive with focus and attention. Make sure that you are able to concentrate fully on the task at hand (driving) before you subscribe to these services, or even before you turn on your regular radio.

Types of music

The type of music that you listen to may also have a big impact on your mood while you drive. For example, music that is full of rage will probably make you want to drive fast or find ways to get mad at other drivers. On the other hand, if you listen to calming and soothing music, your mood will lighten up and you can feel your whole body relaxing. Think of the music that is played during pilates or yoga videos. This is the music that makes you want to breathe regularly, deeply and smoothly.

When to drive

Never drive when you're angry or in any bad shape or mood. This will affect your driving tremendously, and you will probably rub off on other drivers, too. Always drive when there's a smile on your face, or at least in a neutral mood. If you relieve your stress before you even step into your car, you will be able to save yourself some trouble later on when you are actually driving.

While these suggestions are quite basic, they can be helpful in relieving your stress on your daily commute or on your regular driving sessions. Remember to take a deep breath before you start your car, and try to find your happy place.
