ALT-1 Deciding whether to Give two Weeks Notice or not

From 3arf

Two weeks or leave today? It's a dilemma that many face when deciding to leave their job. Often an employee is not even prepared for the decision that is placed upon them. Today, because of sabatoge by disgruntled employees, many companies ask the employee to leave as soon as notice is given, accompanied by security to the door. If it's your choice, however, you should give the appropriate time frame for your company to select a replacement.

Why? Often employees think that the company they are leaving does not deserve to be helped. However, the person that you are helping by giving two weeks' notice is yourself. Even if you already have your replacement job in place, your behavior in your last few days of employment are a reflection not only of your character, but leave a lasting impression of who you were.

Years down the road, a single act of defiance (leaving without notice) can follow your job history around. Frequently companies call personnel offices at your former places of employment to get recommendations or a sense of you as an employee. If the last impression you give is leaving the company without proper notice, you are not likely to get a good recommendation or the benefit of the doubt. A few extra days, even on a job you hate, can help you in the long run.
